The US Army did not have any official military police units specially trained for duty in Europe until the Allied Expeditionary Force set up its own Military Police Force in October 1917.

Most MPs wore black arm brassards with "MP" in white outlined letters, though some had red Roman "MP" letters. Others wore red brassards with black letters.

This soldier is wearing a leather Jerkin, acquired from the British Army. The Jerkin was designed to be worn over the battledress uniform to keep troops warm in colder climates without reducing mobility. The jerkins varied in color from a lighter brown to a dark brown tone.
