Union Private, Light Artillery, 1865
This soldier is armed with a light artillery sabre and wears the foot soldier's overcoat. It was a popular piece of uniform. Late in 1861, officers were authorized to wear sky blue overcoats on the battlefield to make them less conspicous targets.

He has a government made gunner's haversack. This was used to carry ammunition from the limber chest to the piece when in action, thus protecting the flannel bags of powder from sparks.
